My name is David Van Brackle, and I am the Chief Judge of the Southeast USA Regional Programming Contest. I work under the auspices of the Regional Contest Director, Ryan Stansifer, and I have two duties. Before the contest, I am responsible for overseeing the composition of the problem set. During the contest, I am responsible for overseeing the judging of competitors’ submissions. So, this blog is to encourage discussion of those two topics: Problems and Problem Sets, and Judging at the Contest.
If there’s something you’d like to talk about, leave a comment here, and I’ll try to post an article on it. We can talk about other programming contest related things, but keep in mind that I won’t necessarily have any authority to do anything about it, if it’s not about Problems or Judging! Please do NOT post candidate problems here. This blog is open to everyone, including competitors. Please wait until I send out the Southeast USA Region’s Call for Problems, and then follow the directions in there.
Hello, and welcome! Soon, you’ll be seeing articles on each of the 2009 problems, the problem set creation process, and a few other things. Please be patient with me, and let me get those posted before I move on. I expect to get those up around New Year’s.
Hi,
I was wondering if the list of broad categories that you used while categorizing SER2009 problems (or the other Regionals that collaborated) could be listed on the blog. Also, in a separate block, broad categories that you feel are important. This will enable proper teaching of ideas and concepts.

Graph Problems
Dynamic Programming
Geometry Problems

Yes, it’s on my agenda. I want to get through all of the SER2009 problems first, and then I’m going to post a few articles on the problem set selection process.
